Forging Ahead: Steel Stacks
SteelStacks in Bethlehem, PA, is located on the site of the former Bethlehem Steel, the second largest steel manufacturer in the U.S.A 10-acre section of the original mill has been turned into a cultural centre. The main attraction on the site is the remaining blast furnaces. At one time there were seven. The oldest dates from 1915. The furnaces stretch over 1,100 feet. The two largest are more than 230 feet tall. The furnaces produced up to 3,000 tons of iron per day until shuttered in 1995.

Former machine parts from the steel mill have been set into the sidewalks at various spots.

The front door of the Sands’ hotel on part of the former steel mill leads right out to the site’s former trestle which will soon be pedestrian accessible.
There is a proposal to turn this former warehouse into a large Bass Pro Shop.
An archway leans across the main roadway on the site and has a flame that burns at night every hour, reminiscent of the furnace fires
